Tornado

I know that Tornado is supposedly about love. But for me, this song is about death.

I unfortunately started 2010 by losing my younger brother very quickly and very by surprise. He was my opposite, and in a family of four he was a very key part of our family puzzle. I still have nightmares over my mum calling to tell me the news.

The first time I heard Tornado I was commuting home from work and I literally broke down into a puddle of water, feeling as if I leaked right off the train to a random spot flowing down the drain into the first corner I could puddle up into until the shock dropped off. This song so reminded me of the anger/sadness and grief that has been bubbling inside of me for 3 months.

I'm not good at expressing my emotion, and true to the other men in my family, I bottle it up. Even my partner of 2 years says it's difficult to tell what I'm feeling.

At the Boston show, when Jonsi played this song it was very beautiful, and it is still ringing in my ears today. Thank you Jonsi for making something so beautiful.

How Jonsi saved my life.

I feel the need to post this, and here seemed to be an ideal place...

For a long time now, I've been dealing with severe anxiety and depression. About a month ago, I came very near to committing suicide. I had it all planned out, I had written out notes to everyone I knew, everything. The last time I almost did it (which was about a year ago), the thing that stopped me was music. I play violin in several orchestras, and I am very passionate about it.
This time, however, my future career in music just wasn't enough to convince me not to go through with it.
What did though, was listening to Jonsi. The songs gave me hope and solace, and I started to love things again. I no longer felt so alone. Jonsi made my mind a beautiful place again, and I will always be grateful for that. I ripped up the suicide letters I had written, and burned them, and promised myself I'd never do anything to hurt myself.

Jonsi deserves a big thank-you =)

Hi, I have been struggling with those all alright lyrics for sometime, I thought some of you maybe have an opinion. Even though it is sung in English it is really hard to make out what he sings sometimes, I have looked on internet but I don't think they are really correct, this is what I got up with: (The text between the brackets are alternatives or possibilities)
What do you hear? Also the meaning of the song is really interesting..In my opinion it is for Alex.

I want him to know
What I have done
I want him to know
It's bad

I want him to know
What I have done
I want him to know
Right now

Or maybe it’s time tomorrow (it maybe this time tomorrow)
Or maybe today
It is not right
Now it is better
Now will you know
Now he'll know what I have done

I'm sitting with you
Sitting (Sitt) in silence
Listening to birds (perfume?)
Like home ( I call)
Singing in tune together
A psalm for no one
They sing in tune
''Birdlove – it's strong''( But now, It’s how)

They sing into the night now
They’re singing for me
They sing into the night, and
You (...something that sounds like: sitrnov tjirov no)

(Hopelandic)

You...
You are still next to me, Alright
(are still to be, alright)

I am trying to learn Icelandic, at least enough to hold a decent conversation, and was wondering if there's anyone out there who would want an American "pen pal" (I feel 5 years old writing that, but I can't think of a better phrase). I am just getting started, but I'm very dedicated. In a few years I'd like to visit Iceland, and although I know English is spoken by pretty much everyone I'd prefer to learn their language. Plus, it's beautiful!

- This quinoa recipe, only using red peppers and a dash of curry powder and sweet red peppers to make it more suitable to my husbands dead taste buds (http://www.nytimes.com/2008/11/07/health/nutrition/07recipehealth.html)
Raw Vegan Recipes

Since Jonsi is a raw vegan, I thought it would only be appropriate to share raw vegan recipes in the forums as well. I'm not a raw vegan, or even a vegetarian, however I try to live a healthy life and I like cooking and trying different things. I enjoy many different types of cuisines, vegan and gluten-free included. To begin with, I'll share two great dessert recipes I found today (because everyone loves sweet treats ^_^)

Raw Chocolate Truffles:

- 2 tablespoons raw chocolate powder or cacao powder
-1 cup hazlenuts
-1/2 cup dried coconut flakes, unsweetened
-pinch salt
-3/4 teaspoon hazelnut extract
-8 dates
-1/2 cup raisins

Directions: Process 1/4 cup coconut (rest is for coating) in a food processor or blender along with hazelnuts, chocolate, and salt until all are coarsley ground. Add hazelnut extract, dates, and raisins. Process until it has a sticky texture that will hold together when pinched. Roll into balls and roll in the remaining coconut.
These remind me a lot of Jonsi and Alex's Nammi Nammi recipe.

Variations: Use raw carob instead of raw chocolate; replace 4 dates with 1/4 cup dried cherries

Creamy Raw Chocolate Mousse:

-2 tablespoons water
-2 tablespoons orange blossom water or juice
-1/4 cup + 2 tablespoons raw agave nectar
-2 tablespoons raw carob powder
-3/4 teaspoons almond extract
-1 avocado pitted and peeled

Directions: Throw everything in a blender or food processor and blend until fully mixed and creamy. Then place in the fridge for at least a half hour, and enjoy!

Also Note: If you're like me and are not actually a vegan/strict vegetarian, but only an enthusiast of the food, then I've found that you can replace the agave with your favorite honey. Agave can be difficult to find, so I use honey most often.

I found both of these recipes at http://www.rawvegandessertrecipes.info

Another good site is the blog glutenfreegoddess; just google her if you're interested. She's not really a RAW vegan blogger, but has a huge archive of lovely and inventive recipes nonetheless.

this is what I got so far:

And then I heard you
You made me long for
To be a part of
Something that I can't see
A life that is beyond
Something that I can't fear
To be a part of
The story - It belongs to you

Something you said burns
Apart the pen and the paper
You can't always write it
It is something you'll have to do
Gathering stories
A story - It belongs to you
They say that it's gone now
You know that I disagree

I barely hear you
Your signal is gone now
So turn it into video

Tune the radio
Sing along
To all our favorite songs

Your signal is growing
Out in little pieces
And watch in a moment
Secure it for falling

Over the stars
Over the nights
Over the rains
Over the moons

Over the days
Over the streams
Over the skies
Over the ponds

Over the fires
Over the lakes
Over the trees
Over the minds

Our kid zigs
Opens doors
Over the doors
I am alive

can anyone shed some light on this?

http://itunes.apple.com/us/album/the-philistines-jr.-if-a-lot/id477294835

apologies if it has been discussed before. i just stumbled into it and the search function here doesn't bring anything up.

?_?

btw, it sounds like it's a remix and it sounds more like jonsi's glittery music rather thank J&A's solemn ambient stuff.

"Tornado" on Decathlon ad (in Spain)

Hi all, I'm new in this forum (I just joined actually). I was hanging out with a friend at his place this evening and I overheard a familiar tune on the TV. I realised it was "Tornado" (I've been mildly obssessed with song for some time now) but it was on an advert for outdoor clothing/mountainwear. For Decathlon. I swear I'm not a snob, but boy was I disappointed! I'm all for the democratisation of Jónsi's music (the more the merrier, so to speak), but Decathlon? Really? Mountainwear?!

My question is, what do you think of Jónsi's music being used for adverts? Not movie trailers or TV shows, but adverts? Maybe I'm oversensitive, but this evening, after the initial grin of recognition, I felt a little violated *tear*

JF Secret Santa?

It's that time of year, and the SRMB does a Secret Santa thing that was really fun, so I thought we could do one, too? I want to see if anyone is interested first. What would happen is you guys would email me your name, mailing address, and screen name, and I would randomize everything and send you a person's info for you to buy a gift for. The gift would be less than $15/10-ish euro. You don't have to tell them who it's from, if you want it to be a secret, or you can go ahead and spill the beans. I will promise on a stack of bibles to delete all your personal info after the thing is over, and I will not give it to anyone besides your Santa. Anyone can participate, new or old, young or young-at-heart.
If enough people are interested I'll get something going in the next few weeks, so we all have time to shop/create and ship. Remember to allow enough time for international shipping, it's a huge bummer if your package doesn't make it by Christmas. Also, please only participate if you really are going to do it, when someone cops out the person who was supposed to get their gift is very sad :(
So what do you guys think?

What "other" music have you grabbed lately?

I’m a real magpie when it comes to music.

I can’t help grabbing it left right and centre. Mostly to audition it, either on “whyTunes” or torrent, then if I like it I buy a copy, especially if the artist is one that I will follow, or I just buy it outright and if I hate it, stiff shit. No really, that’s true.

Eg Jonsi I grabbed on-line then fell in love with it (like DUH!) and went and bought several copies of the CD, bought the digital download, the LE, six copies of Heima etc etc. then went and took two others to the live show.

If I don’t like the music, I just erase it to free up hard drive space

So was wondering what were the latest things you had all downloaded lately? I must admit my tastes lately have veered towards more “organic” music rather than electronic, so have been checking out a lot of new Americana and alt.country stuff, with some other stuff in the mix such as albums Ive been meaning to get for ages, sometimes years, but hadn’t got around to it yet. Here’s what I’ve grabbed in the last month or so, in no particular order:

Dylan Leblanc ~ Paupers Field(still listening)
The Fall ~ Out Future Your Clutter (angry!!)
Daniel Johnson ~ Everything...yikes!
Foy Vance ~ THIS GUY IS A KILLER!
Felice Brothers~ Yonder Is The Clock (I like it)
Ray LaMontagne ~ God Willing ( used to hate him but this is great)
Mavis Staples ~ You’re Not alone ( a legend)
Scott matthew ~ There Is An Ocean ( like a car accident on the highway)
Tame Impala~ Innerspeaker (still listening but sounds good so far)
Avi Buffalo ~ Avi Buffalo(still listening, but on SUBPOP so worth a punt)
James ~ The Night Before((still listening)
KT Tunstall~ Tiger Suit (meh)
Teddy Thompson ~ A Piece of What You Need( kinda cool I guess)
Sky Sailing ~ An Airplane (got this by mistake but its grown on me)
Tinderstick~ Falling (couple of standouts but its annoying)
Alejandro Escovedo ~ Street Songs of Love (great)
Eels ~ End of Time (great classic eels)
Isobel Campbell & Mark Lanegan ~ Hawk (7/10)
Josh Ritter ~ So Runs The World Away(disappointing)
Los Lobos ~ Tin Can Rust (good, typical )
The Cure ~ Disintegration (need I say more?)
Tired Pony ~ The Place We Ran From (listening)
The Hold Steady - Heaven Is Whenever (very good)
Blitzen Trapper ~ Destroyer of the Void (very cool)
American Slang - Gaslight Anthem (rocking)
Band of Skulls ~ Baby Darling Doll Face Honey (rocking hard!)
Ben Folds - Lonely Avenue (yeah quite cool, still listening)
Jerry Lee Lewis - Mean Old Man (I loves the Killer!)
Neil Young - Le Noise (another great old fart)
Justin Townes Earle –Harlem River Blues (brilliant)
Tricky - Mixed Race (50/50)
Animal Collective~ everything..:P)
Efterklang - Parades (loving it)
Broken Social Scene – Forgiveness (eh, couple of great tunes, but meh)
Ben Frost - By The Throat (still listening)
Rhys Chatham ~ The Bern Project
Don Caballero~ Everything
The Accidental ~ There Were Wolves (like it )
A shitload of Ryan Adams boots and out-takes

Also Fever Ray, some old Ride(Nowhere), John Grant etc

So, is anybody here going to Airwaves this year? The line up has pretty much most of the bands I want to see, and the addition of Yoko Ono and Bjork just make it a little more sweeter methinks...

Some of you have touched on this briefly in the 2011 thread but maybe it would be nice to have a place where we can put the year behind us and move forward.

What are your dreams for the next year? What do you need to work on? What are you already good at and how will it take you into the next year? Are you making any resolutions? What do you hope to learn and what's your game plan to get it done? Are there any habits you need to break or form?
